Google Ads, Why Care?

Google Ads was launched just two years after what has become the most popular website in the world: Google.com. The advertising platform came on the scene in October 2000 as Google Adwords, but after some rebranding in 2018, it was renamed Google Ads. Given Google’s expansive reach, chances are you’ve seen (and probably clicked on) a Google ad … and so have your potential customers.

It’s no secret that, these days, the stronger and more focused your paid campaigns are, the more clicks you generate — leading to a greater probability of obtaining new customers. This is why Google Ads has become increasingly popular among businesses across all industries.

Google Ads is a paid advertising platform that falls under a marketing channel known as pay-per-click (PPC), where you (the advertiser) pays per click.

Fact: Every second, there are 2.3 million searches performed on Google, and the majority of search results pages include Google ads. Paid for by businesses, Google ads can be an extremely effective way of driving relevant, qualified traffic to your website exactly when people are searching for the types of products or services your business offers.

Definition: Google Ads is an online advertising platform developed by Google, where advertisers pay to display brief advertisements, service offerings, product listings, video content and generate mobile application installs within the Google ad network to web users.

Google Ads works by displaying your ad when people search online for the products and services you offer. By leveraging smart technology, Google Ads helps get your ads in front of potential customers at just the moment they’re ready to take action.

There are three basic types of Google Ads:

  • Search Network campaigns – usually text form, these ads can show on Google Search results pages when someone searches for a product or service that’s similar to yours.  these “text ads” are an excellent opportunity to capture users who are at the research and purchasing stages of the digital sales funnel. Text ads are marked with a small “Ad” tag next to the site URL.
  • Display Network campaigns – usually image form, these ads appear on websites or apps that your customers visit. The Google Display Network works differently. Instead of showing ads to users who are actively searching for a product or service online, “display ads” or “banner ads” are placed on websites you think your target will be on.
  • Video campaigns – usually 6 or 15 second videos, these ads show right before or during YouTube content

With Google Ads, you’re in charge of your online advertising costs. Never pay more than your monthly budget cap, and you can stop any time

According to Google, advertisers make $8 for every $1 they spend on Google Ads. So, there are a few reasons why you’d want to consider advertising on Google.

Need another reason? Your competitors are using Google Ads (and they might even be bidding on your branded terms). Thousands of companies use Google Ads to promote their businesses, which means that even if you’re ranking organically for a search term, your results are being pushed down the page, beneath your competitors.

If you’re using PPC to advertise your product or services, Google Ads should be a part of your paid strategy.

Google Ads can be a big investment, both in time and money, but it’s a great one. The search network can make sure your ads rank well in searches of users who are looking for brands like yours, and the display network can be used for re-engagement or discovery campaigns.

Over time, Google Ads will also help you analyse and improve those ads to reach more people so your business can hit all of your paid campaign goals. Additionally, no matter the size of your business or your available resources, you can tailor your ads to suit your budget.

Though the system can be complex, there’s a lot to gain from using it, and it’s entirely possible to run profitable campaigns with low CPCs even on the smallest of marketing budgets.
